Chromatography is the separation of individual elements within a given compound via a carrier medium, such gas or liquid. Combining chromatography with spectrometry results in highly accurate identification of even trace amounts of substances within a compound.

Gas Chromatography – Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS)

GC-MS is an incredibly powerful method for quantifying and identifying highly volatile compounds. The elements contained within a sample are separated based on volatility as they travel through the gas chromatograph. The mass spectrometer then identifies each element present in the compound based on its mass spectrum. A GC-MS instrument will deliver data on both the identity and quantity of each element.
