Ace Laboratories Adhesion Testing

Adhesion testing can be used to characterize the strength of bonds between materials, coatings, and adhesives. Looking to measure the 90 degree peel strength of your rubber to fabric bond, the 180 degree peel strength of your pressure sensitive tape, or the rubber to metal bond strength of your product?  With our experienced technicians and calibrated testing equipment, ACE can help you with all your adhesion testing needs.

Test Details

Adhesion to Flexible Substrate

Used to determine adhesion strength between rubber and fabric or other flexible substrates. This method is only applicable when the adhered surfaces are relatively flat or uniformly circular as in belting, hose, tire carcasses, or rubber-covered sheet metal. It does not apply to surfaces that contain sharp bends or angles.

Adhesion to Rigid Substrates

Used to determine the bond strength between rubber and metal substrates, typically performed on test specimens molded in a laboratory. Slight modifications can be made to allow testing of production parts dependent on the part design.  Although the method specifically calls out testing to metals, it’s possible to test the adhesion to other rigid substrates, such as plastics, as long as the specimens conform to the required geometries.

Peel or Stripping Strength of Adhesive Bonds

Used to determine the comparative peel or stripping strength characteristics of adhesive bonds when tested on standard-sized specimens and under defined conditions of pretreatment, temperature, and testing machine speed. Some examples of materials tested may include plastic films, adhesive labels, and waterproofing materials.

Adhesion Between Steel Tire Cords and Rubber

Used to determine the bond strength between rubber and steel cord used in tire manufacturing. This test was initially designed to be used as a quality acceptance test for the steel cord, however, rubber compounders have utilized the test to determine if changes to the rubber formulation improve or hurt the bond strength.
